Graphic Designer Job Summary

Urban Cartographics is seeking a dedicated Graphic Designer to join our growing team. You will collaborate with other designers, urban planners, and land use attorneys to create compelling, communicative, and beautifully designed presentations, maps, and graphics to aid in the New York City development approval process. Your responsibilities will include transforming accompanying copy and narrative into graphics that convey a message or argument accurately and precisely. While an urban planning background is not necessary, you must be passionate about New York City and urbanism. Our ideal candidate has a portfolio that clearly demonstrates the ability to effectively convey complex information using clear and compelling graphics.

Graphic Designer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with other designers, planners, and project managers on project concepts.
  • Develop presentations, letterheads, templates, and other graphics as needed.
  • Advise on best design practices and update design software accordingly.
  • Adhere to an existing voice and brand.
  • Participate in quality assurance checks and implement subsequent revisions.
  • Neatly and accurately package products for distribution to clients and City agencies.


Graphic Designer Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, art, design, architecture or a related field
  • 0-2 years experience in a related field
  • Portfolio
  • Ability to commute to a Midtown Manhattan office 1 day/week, with the other days of the week being remote
  • Interest or prior experience in urban design, urban planning, or zoning
  • Proficient in design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and the willingness to learn new, similar programs
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Experience in creating graphics for, and managing, social media accounts strongly preferred
  • Exceptional creativity, organization, and communication skills
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that often requires quick adaptation and flexibility
  • GIS, SQL coding, data management, web design skills a plus


Additional Information

  • You must complete a 3-month trial period to assess your performance and fit with the firm.
  • This 3-month trial period will be paid at $35/hour with an expectation of working 30-40 hours a week.
  • Following the successful completion of this 3-month trial period, you will be offered full-time salaried employment beginning at $70,000 a year, including benefits, with ample room for growth.
